The UNSS (National School Sports Association) at Lycée Albert I has around 150 members out of 850 pupils.

With a membership rate among pupils of around 17.5%, the school sits a little above the national French average.

Pupils can get involved in a dozen activities in sports centres on Wednesday afternoons, either competitively or for recreation. The activities are led by PE teachers and specialists.

Pupils also have the opportunity to represent Lycée Albert I in competition, even where there is no organised framework for the sport in the Principality. They simply need to make themselves known to the relevant UNSS point of contact and meet the commitment requirements.

In chess, for example, the school last year competed for a Champion of France title, while the Lycée basketball team this year reached the regional final of the schools competition.

The rowing, football, athletics and handball teams play in the regional finals every year, with the best teams going on to the French championships.

The UNSS also offers the opportunity to represent the school as a young official or a young coach.

The “Young Officials, Towards a Responsible Generation” programme offers each UNSS member the chance to take responsibility in seven different roles: Student Vice President, Young Manager, Young Reporter, Young Organiser, Young Coach, Young Referee, and Young First Aider.

Good to know: As part of the options available for the baccalaureate, having been a Young Official at national level allows pupils to achieve a grade of 16 out of 16 in the subject.
